Building websites and ranking them on search engines has been part of my workflow for years. I am no stranger to technical SEO, site architecture, or content optimization. In past projects, getting a fresh site crawled, indexed, and appearing in search results was a straightforward process.
Then came christechno.com.
For two full years, this domain was trapped in Google Search Console purgatory. Despite publishing hundreds of well-researched technical articles, maintaining strict site hygiene, and fulfilling every known SEO requirement, Google refused to index the site. Out of more than 370 pages, exactly one page—the homepage—was indexed. Everything else sat indefinitely under the dreaded status: “Crawled – currently not indexed.”
Here is the story of how I threw every textbook SEO fix at the problem, why traditional performance optimizations failed, and how a critical infrastructure shift to Cloudflare finally broke the 24-month stalemate.
Doing Everything “By the Book” and Getting Nowhere
When a website faces indexing issues, the standard advice is usually to improve content quality, build backlinks, or fix basic technical tags. I executed all of them rigorously.
1. Relentless Content & Syndication
I maintained a disciplined publishing cadence, putting out up to four articles per week. To build social proof and author entity signals, I cross-posted content to external platforms while implementing strict canonical tags pointing back to my domain:

- Medium & Dev.to: Cross-published software engineering and tech pieces using canonical URLs to consolidate link equity.
- Substack: Distributed follow-up analysis and newsletters to nurture an audience.
- E-E-A-T Infrastructure: Added sitewide footer links to verified external profiles, ensuring search bots could establish a clear connection between my author identity and the site.
2. Deep Technical Audits
I ran raw curl requests against my HTTP headers and audited every file line by line:
- Sitemap Hierarchy: Corrected protocol mismatches from legacy HTTP to HTTPS, resolved parent/child sitemap submission discrepancies in Google Search Console, and stripped out a hidden
X-Robots-Tag: noindexheader that was blockingsitemap.xml. - Internal Link Equity: Scanned the site for structural gaps and fixed nearly 100 orphaned pages using automated internal linking passes.
- Server Migration: Noticed periodic “Failed Request” spikes in my crawl stats while on a local hosting provider. I migrated the entire environment to SiteGround, which immediately drove failed crawl requests down to zero.

Yet, despite all of these changes, the indexing counter in Search Console remained dead flat.
The Real Bottleneck: TTFB and Global Node Response Times
While my PageSpeed Insights scores looked decent on synthetic desktop tests, Google Search Console’s Crawl Stats revealed a deeper metric that I had overlooked for too long: Average Response Time.
My server’s average response time constantly hovered between 800 ms and 1,300 ms. Here is the catch: if I tested the site directly from my browser or ran a curl command in terminal, the TTFB (Time to First Byte) appeared completely fine. Local access felt fast and responsive. But GSC Crawl Stats told a very different story. Googlebot was attempting to crawl my site from data centers located halfway across the world, creating a massive latency gap that synthetic local tests simply missed.
To human visitors browsing locally, a one-second delay might be barely noticeable. But to Googlebot—which processes billions of pages daily—a server that takes over a second to respond per request consumes an unsustainable amount of crawl budget. When a site responds too slowly from international nodes, Google’s automated crawlers deprioritize rendering and indexing its inner pages to conserve resources.
I spent weeks trying to optimize the codebase to fix this:
- Replaced legacy performance plugins with LiteSpeed Cache to handle server-side caching.
- Delayed non-essential JavaScript execution to clean up First Contentful Paint (FCP) and Total Blocking Time (TBT).
- Compressed assets, enabled Gzip, and set up local image optimization crons.
Even after all of these tweaks, the high international latency persisted due to geographical distance and origin server routing limits.
The Turning Point: Moving to Cloudflare Edge Nodes
Realizing my origin server’s geographic location was imposing a physical latency floor on international crawlers, I routed the domain through Cloudflare’s global edge network.
Instead of making Googlebot travel all the way to a single origin server for every single asset request, Cloudflare immediately distributed my site across hundreds of edge data centers globally. The moment a crawler requested a page, the response was served directly from the nearest edge node.
The impact on Google Search Console’s Crawl Stats was immediate: the average response time dropped off a cliff.

The Delayed Reward: From Burnout to Indexing Surge
Even after fixing the latency issue, nothing happened right away. Expecting an instant resolution after two years of troubleshooting, I monitored Search Console daily for weeks. When the indexed count didn’t budge, burnout set in. I stepped away from the site and stopped publishing new articles for nearly three months, convinced that even global edge delivery hadn’t solved the mystery.
Then, during a routine check months later, I opened Search Console and saw a massive spike in the indexing report.

Google had finally re-evaluated the domain. The graph shot up from 1 to dozens, then past 180+ indexed pages in a matter of weeks, with impressions and organic search traffic following right behind.

Key Lessons for Experienced Webmasters
If you are dealing with a site stuck in “Crawled – currently not indexed” despite having solid content and clean technical tags, keep these takeaways in mind:
- Crawl Speed Over Everything: Server response time (TTFB) is not just a user experience metric—it is a strict gatekeeper for indexing. If your origin server responds over 500 ms, Googlebot will scale back crawl depth long before it evaluates your content quality.
- Edge Caching is Essential: Simply using local caching plugins is rarely enough if your target audience or search crawlers access your site internationally. Utilizing an edge network ensures rapid response times regardless of where the request originates.
- Google’s Quality Evaluation Delays Are Real: Algorithms do not update your domain’s trust score in real time. Once infrastructure bottlenecks are removed, it can take anywhere from 8 to 12 weeks for Google’s re-indexing pipelines to fully process the site.
- Diversify Beyond One Engine: Throughout this entire two-year ordeal, Bing Webmaster Tools had indexed almost every single page on the domain without issue. Different search engines evaluate infrastructure requirements differently.
Fixing a deep-rooted indexing anomaly rarely comes down to a single magic setting. It is the cumulative effect of clean internal architecture, proper headers, and—above all—ensuring your server delivers content to Googlebot in milliseconds rather than seconds.
